POWERING WORKPLACE PERFORMANCE
DECJUBA
“At DECJUBA we have an incredibly talented team. From the team in-store to our head office and warehouse – we deliver amazing to our customers every day, and we want to do the same for our team. We knew that there was potential for development and career progression and wanted to invest internally to grow our leadership capabilities.”

Relaunched by Tania Austin in 2008, DECJUBA has become a leading retailer in Australia and New Zealand. Over the past 12 years, they have significantly grown their store footprint, from just five stores to 140 stores and two online sites.
DECJUBA believes that its greatest asset is its people, and their growing team includes approximately 95% females, with over 1400 people across the retail and head office teams.
By supporting, inspiring, and challenging their team, DECJUBA has built a culture that empowers the team to achieve the brand’s promise to ‘deliver amazing’ at every touch point.
DECJUBA’s objectives
DECJUBA were clear on their next steps for growth, which involved expanding their leadership team with fresh ideas and skills to deliver on their long-term strategy.
DECJUBA developed a leadership framework, mapping out the key capabilities their future leaders would require to both grow the DECJUBA business but also succeed within their senior roles. The missing piece was a partner that could take this framework and complement it with a learning and development program that would help realise their goals and bring their vision to life. They also wanted a program that was niche in both the number of team members who were involved as well as the program itself. All team members were given the opportunity to apply for the program, allowing them to reflect on their own achievements and goals, irrespective of the outcome of their application.

Selecting the right partner
Already aware of DeakinCo.’s successful reputation in L&D, DECJUBA were further impressed with the team’s seamless ability to flex their own model to integrate with the existing work DECJUBA has already undertaken. They were particularly interested in the Graduate Certificate of Management as it allowed their team to develop their own skillsets around empowering and motivating others, effective communication, and being able to develop a business plan for the long term.
Complementing this qualification, they were also attracted to the Professional Practice Credentials, specifically around Leadership which covered areas such as adaptive mindsets, leading and developing people, and driving strategic results. This mix coupled with a small cohort meant the business could keep the program highly focused but also gather key learnings and insights before executing across a larger group.
The roll-out of the D:GROW Leadership program, has been both online and in person, with the first cohort spread across the country. With DeakinCo. already a well-established online provider, it wasn’t a challenge to both setup and execute the program for interstate participants. Participants undertook a mix of individual learning and development as well as face-to-face workshops, where real-life challenges were entrenched in the D:GROW Leadership program for the cohort to tackle and strategise as a group and solve individually.
“DeakinCo.’s expertise and flexibility have ensured the successful implementation of the D:GROW Leadership program. We’re still in the first phase of execution but can already see the impact reflected in our participant’s feedback, engagement and enthusiasm. ” Tiffany Helou, GM People Experience
Results to date
The DeakinCo. team spent time both on the ground and remotely, getting to know the DECJUBA team before moving into any level of execution.
Understanding the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the leadership framework was crucial in being able to craft the most appropriate solution for the business. Everything was done in collaboration with DECJUBA, ensuring their vision and goals were always at the forefront.
With the first cohort now complete, the DECJUBA team now are keen to see the commercial results. Feedback has been incredibly positive, noting a sense of ‘pride’ and ‘self-awareness’ through personal reflection, professionally and personally. Being able to reflect on what they already know as well as learn new skills and apply this to on-the-job challenges has provided a new sense of awareness and capability. More broadly, teams are also recognising the investment being made internally, which the business hopes will reflect in greater retention and job satisfaction ongoing.
